I believe there are some ATA/PIO documents on osdever.net that may help you

Re: how can i get hard drive info?
If you only care about the disk geometry and you're at the boot loader stage, all that info is passed to you by the BIOS. Otherwise, I'd read the ATA/ATAPI documents (SATA and SCSI drives usually have ATA compatibility modes).
Cheers, Bogdan

Re: how can i get hard drive info?
Their is alway the way of opening up the computer and read the hard-drive label. It contains all the information about sector, tracks, heads etc. Some hard drive brands have better details than others
